Daily exercise:

  • Reduces the risk of heart disease by improving blood circulation throughout the body
  • Keeps weight under control
  • Improves blood cholesterol levels
  • Prevents and manages high blood pressure
  • Prevents bone loss
  • Boosts energy level
  • Helps manage stress
  • Establishes good heart healthy habits and counters the conditions (obesity, high blood pressure, poor cholesterol levels, poor lifestyle habits, etc.) that lead to heart attack and stroke later in life.
  • In older people, helps delay or prevent chronic illnesses and diseases associated with aging and maintains quality of life and independence longer.
Take time each day to increase your daily exercise and live a healthier life.

At Home

Go out for a short walk before breakfast or after dinner or both-even take your dog along. Start with 5 minutes and work up to 30 minutes. Also walk or bike to the corner store instead of driving. When walking pickup the pace from leisurely to brisk. If driving park farther away from the shopping mall and walk the extra distance. Wear your walking shoes and sneak in an extra lap or two around the mall.

At Work

Most of us have sedentary jobs. And since work takes up a significant part of the day, following are a few suggestions for increasing your physical activity during the work day. Stand while talking on the telephone. Better yet, walk down the hall to speak with someone rather than using the telephone. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Or get off a few floors early and take the stairs the remainder of the way. Also walk around your building for a break during the day or during lunch. If you travel to work, walk while waiting for the plane at the airport. Whenever possible, stay at hotels with fitness centers or swimming pools while on business trips.
